Why That Viral Skincare Trend Flopped For You (And What To Do Next)

It’s a common story: you see a new skincare trend blowing up online, try it for yourself, and... nothing.

Or worse, your skin looks and feels worse than before.

If you’re wondering why that new viral product isn’t working for you, or what to do if you’ve already invested your hard-earned money, you’re in the right place.

Why Did That Trend Flop For You?

Let’s break down the most common reasons why skincare trends don’t always deliver:

1. You Might Not Have Your Basics Right

The basics of skincare are simple but important.

  • Morning: Always use a sunscreen (ideally SPF50+)

  • Night: Cleanse, then moisturiser to replenish your skin.

These steps support your skin barrier and give any trend or treatment a solid foundation.

If your basics aren’t sorted, trendy products and methods can actually do more harm than good.

2. The Trend Might Not Suit Your Skin Type

Not every trend is for every skin type.

For example, Slugging (coating your face in a thick occlusive) works wonders for dry or parched skin, but if you’re prone to congestion or breakouts, you might run into problems.

It’s a good idea to check if the trend actually makes sense for your skin type before jumping in- you can even check out if other people with your skin type have tried it, and if so, how it’s gone.

3. Some Trends Just Aren’t About Skin Health

Sometimes, a trend takes off because it looks great on camera, not because it’s healthy or effective for your skin.

“Glass skin” and other camera-friendly fads might focus more on instant, visible results than on long-term skin health.

That doesn’t mean they can’t do both, but it’s worth noting not everything you see online is realistic.

So You Tried the Trend…Now What?

Already bought that new product or tried the latest hack and it’s not working out?

Here are your next steps:

1. Tweak the Trend (or Product) To Fit You

You don’t have to follow the trend exactly as you saw it online.

To follow on from the Slugging example, instead of using a thick layer of Vaseline when you’re prone to congestion, try swapping in a lighter barrier cream designed for sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Lighter products for slugging we love (only use a pea-sized amount)

2. Check What the Experts Are Saying

Trends that go viral for the “glow” or the before/after pics aren’t always backed by real expertise- everyone’s skin is different.

  • Look for advice from skin professionals, dermatologists, or trusted creators who have a background in skin health.

  • Just because someone is an expert, it doesn’t mean they’re always right- but a bit of research can help you avoid mistakes and put things in perspective.

  • Find a variety of reviews from people you trust or who already enjoy skin products that you enjoy too, for a better chance of something else working.

3. Adjust How (and How Often) You Use The Product

Sometimes it’s not the product, but how you use it.

Use a smaller amount (pea-sized instead of a 10-cent piece) or only apply to dry areas, and limiting how often you use it (maybe three nights a week instead of every night) can also help you change the trend to suit your skin’s needs.

If you’re reacting to an exfoliating cleanser that’s supposed to give “glass skin,” try using it just three nights a week or diluting it with a little water for a gentler cleanse.

Some cleansers work better when used less frequently, or when lathered up more lightly for sensitive skin.

Final Thoughts

Knowledge around why a trend is being embraced is the best way to enjoy it in a thoughtful and skin-supportive way.
